HYDRAULIC FRACTURING
Fracking {hydraulic fracturing} has been used since the 1950s to stimulate gas wells on the plains of Cmdeboo, part of the vast Karoo hinterland.
The key risks and impacts of shale gas processes can b divided as follows: contamination of groundwater by fracturing fluids arrising from wellbore casing failure ;polution of land and surface water and groundwater arrising from spillage of fracturing additives; and spillage from liquid waste storage,
lagoons / pits containing drilling mud or flowback water flaring/venting and local impacts,
